RATINAKKATKALUM ANMAIKALUM
TARAMANA VAIRANGAL
RATHINAKKATKALUM ANMEEKAMUM

In Tamil by LION MJF N. LINGESWARAN . I've noticed a few reviews of the prior edition that complain the text isn't long enough. I haven't seen the older book, but if it is anything like this one the text doesn't need to be longer. Mr lingeswaran says exactly what he wants to say without dancing around the subject forever. Along with gem care, you'll learn the history of stones, about variations within each family, current markets, enhancements, and more. Learn which stones can be cleaned with ultrasonic and steam cleaners, whether to avoid light, and how heat affects each gem. This is a fantastic book that you might want to take along with you when you shop for jewelry.

Investment

The author states investment gemstones are increasing in price because the worldwide economic situation has given a boost to hard assets. He warns that investing in gems is only for the very rich. He also states you should only buy untreated gemstones. You should buy them for their beauty and enjoyment and if they appreciate, it is a bonus. He warns against gem investment scams and that gem shows are no guarantee of reputation.

Country of Origin

The author discusses how many dealers call gemstones Burmese Ruby or Kashmir sapphire when they are not actually from these locations. Some dealers use these descriptions to signify color rather then true country of origin. Beware.

Buying Gemstones-Treatments

The author states the most common treatments must be declared on the sales receipt or certificate and that all treated stones will sell for less than untreated stones. Then he states that many dealers who sell run-of-the-mill gemstones believe that declaring treatment is irrelevant.

Organic Gems

another well done section includes gems such as pearls, jet, ivory, amber and others.

Precious vs. Semi-Precious

lingeswaran makes the argument that throughout history the concept of which gemstones constitute precious gemstones has changed. He makes a strong case that many new semi-precious gems, such as tsavorite and tanzanite, paraipa were never even discovered 50 years ago and are more beautiful than many of today's precious(Value) gemstones.

Rarity

According to Wise, "beauty drives demand and rarity drives price." He argues there are two types of rarity, actual and apparent. Gems that are found in small numbers are actually rare. Gemstones that are in high demand and relatively numerous are apparently rare. . The best stones to collect are stones in high demand and short supply.
